Napoleon III Clock and Candlesticks in Ormolu and Limoges Enamel

About the Item

Rare 19th century gilt bronze and enamel set composed of a mantel clock and a pair of two-light candlesticks. The set is in Louis XV style and is decorated with lively foliage and Rocaille. Each piece is richly adorned with painted enamel from limoges and depicts the romantic adventures of Greek and Roman gods. The dial of the clock features Arabic numerals for hours, with Venus, the goddess of love, on clouds in the company of four winged cupids. The clock is topped by a vase accented with multicolored flowers and an ormolu top. The candelabra barrels illustrate the myth of Europa, who was abducted by Zeus after he transformed himself into a white bull. Enamel plates signed: HD. The clock is marked behind the dial: JAPY FRERES & Cie / GRANDE MED. D’HONNEUR. Original clockwork, cleaned and in working condition. Very good overall condition. The valuable nature of Renaissance enamels seduced numerous amateur and professional antique collectors from the beginning of the 19th century. As evidenced by the retrospective museums of Universal Expositions, painted enamel from Limoges occupies a central position in the exhibits dedicated to the history of these techniques. Swept up in the current of historicism, Louis-Philippe gave the Sèvres porcelain manufacturing company the task of rediscovering the secrets of how enamel was produced in the Limoges area during the 16th century. As a result, in 1845 François Brongniart, the director of manufacturing, created a workshop for enamel on metal, which stayed active until 1872. A large part of his production consisted of small objects decorated with mythological scenes or gray-toned ornaments that were sometimes accented with transparent colors, painted by Jacob Meyer-Heine, the manager of the Sèvres enamel workshop. The reproduction of these enamels by the manufacturers in Sèvres as well as Samson ceramics, which threw themselves into Limoges Renaissance enamel production during the last quarter of the century, met a real demand at a moment when the art was being rediscovered and appreciated. Important collectors of the time period attested to its significance, such as the French collectors Louis-Fidel Debruge-Dumenil and Alexandre du Sommerard, Prince Soltykoff and Count Basilewski of Russia, the Rothschild family and Frédéric Spitzer, a Venetian merchant.
