About the Item

Gilt and patinated bronze. The original movement has been cleaned and revised and is in perfect working condition (runs for around one week). Overall authentic condition with its original gilding. Sunflowers symbolize loyalty and adoration thanks to the myth of Clytie and Apollo. And, because of their association with the sun, sunflowers are well-known for being a happy flower and the perfect bloom for a summer flower delivery to brighten someone's mood. The pendulum has the form of a butterfly, a popular motif used in decorative arts since the time of Revolution. Clocks with butterfly decorations suggest the fragile victory of love over time and death. An identical clock was sold from the collection of Givenchy, Christies Paris, 17. June 2022, Lot 272 for € 25.200,00. Literature: C. Plante, R. Garnier Designs for gilt bronze objects from the French Restauration 1814-1830, Londres, 2002, p. 68, pl. 62. Symbols of Power – Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style 1800-1815, Exhibition catalogue, 2007–2008, St.Louis, Boston, Paris.

The clock case decorated overall with very fine ‘Vernis Martin’ lacquer paint with floral sprays and garlands. The waisted case with pierced foliate bronze mounts and surmounted by a foliate finial with a bird. On scroll feet, the bracked conformingly mounted and decorated with a scene with dogs. A fine three week going movement, striking half and full hours on a silvered bronze bell. Festeau Le Jeune became master in 1769. Clock case and bracket are stamped by the ebenist ‘A. Gosselin’ (Antoine Gosselin 1731-1794, Paris, master in 1752), as well as the stamp of the Parisian gilt ‘JME’. The technique was named after the French brothers Guillaume and Etienne-Simon Martin, who perfected the process, but covers work by other craftsmen as well.
