About the Item

Subject: Viennese gorgeous mantel/mantle/table chiming clock, main parts made of wood. Explanation: Mantel clocks or shelf clocks are house clocks traditionally placed on the shelf, or mantel, above the fireplace. Manufactory: Viennese manufactory Finest quality. Dating: made circa 1820-1830. Material: Wood (ebony): The clock's case. Enamel: Clockface (clock dial). Bronze: Applications & decorations. Glass: Door of clockface (clock dial). Mechanism: Spring mechanism/tension so-said Viennese striking mechanism (four times striking per hour: The clockface has three holes for winding up). Measures: Height: 15.35 inches. Width: 11.81 inches. Depth: 5.51 inches. Specifications: This finest Viennese Mantle/Mantel clock's dial is protected by a glass door/the clockface is made of enamel/the bezel of glass door is made of brass (Latin/Roman numerals on dial existing). The movement is securely attached to the clock's case/it is in excellent condition. The Original clockwork (display for minutes and hours) is in working order (the clock has One Pendulum Shaped as Sun). The clock's wooden case (made of ebony) is dominated by large dial attached to middle area / additionally, the clock's chest has semi-circular top piece to which a bronze vase en miniature is attached. The mentioned chest stands on a two-part (half-round) support which is based on four lion's paws/claws fixed on wooden rectangular socle. - Finally, to each lateral side of clock's chest there is a handle made of bronze attached: It consists of a lion's head wearing a movable ring. The surface of wooden chest is abundantly decorated with bronze mountings depicting leaves, hippocampi (= deriving from Greek mythology, having the upper body of a horse with the lower body of a fish), snakes and a lion's mask at top. A key for winding up the clock's mechanism is preserved. Condition: Finest condition! The clock's mechanism is working/the clock's original condition has never been changed.

An Empire Mantel Clock by H.Robert-Horloger De La Reine, Paris, date circa 1820-1830 A superb Empire gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock of eight day duration signed on the white enamel dial H.Robert-Horloger a la Reine . The dial with Roman numerals and gilded steel Breguet style hands for the hours and minutes. The movement with anchor escapement, silk thread suspension, striking on a single bell, with outside count wheel. The extremely fine case featuring the standing figure of Urania, Muse of Astronomy holding a pen in her left hand which points to a star-studded globe adorned with the signs of the zodiac around its circumference, the globe set on the back of four putti upon a plinth, containing the dial with a serpent-wrapped Paris, date circa 1820-30 Height 73 cm, width 50cm, depth 22 cm. In addition to the above prestigious locations, clocks of this model can be found at Warsaw Castle and in the Bayerischen Nationalmuseum, Munich. The Parisian clockmaker Bailly (d. after 1818) was one of the finest of his day and as such earned the title of Horloger de LL. MM. II. Et RR (Clockmaker to Their Imperial and Royal Majesties). Working from rue de Richelieu he was with Lepaute one of the main suppliers to the Garde-Meuble. Bailly, who retired in 1818 had the responsibility of maintaining the clocks at Compiègne and the Trianons and is known to have used cases by the leading Parisian bronziers including Pierre-Philippe Thomire and Claude Galle as well as Ferdinand Schwerdfeger who supplied him with a case for a regulator surmounted by a star-studded and zodiac banded globe...
