About the Item

Late 19th Century English Chinoiserie Revival Mahogany Pagoda-Top Mantel Clock with Gilt Bronze Mounts An elegant and finely crafted English mantel clock, dating to the late 19th century, notable for its integration of Chinoiserie motifs within a neoclassical architectural framework. The case, constructed of richly figured mahogany, is veneered with symmetrical flame-matched panels and edged with a delicate inlaid border. It is set on four turned compressed feet and features a boldly gadrooned base moulding, subtly echoing Georgian precedent. The distinctive roof form is carved in the manner of a pagoda, with deeply incised acanthus-leaf decoration radiating from a central finial. This ebonized upper structure introduces a whimsical Eastern influence, aligning the clock with the English Chinoiserie revival taste of the second half of the 19th century—particularly popular in decorative furnishings of the Aesthetic Movement. The circular white enamel dial is enclosed by a finely cast and gilded bezel in foliate relief and features stylized black Arabic numerals and pierced steel hands of serpentine and lyre form. Twin winding apertures indicate an eight-day, time and strike movement. The movement is revealed through a rear access door with a pierced gilt-brass medallion backed in original silk, its radial anthemion design both functional and ornamental. The brass movement is marked with the serial number 407 and retains its original bell and pendulum assembly. While unstamped by maker, the format, finish, and case design are consistent with high-quality English mantel clocks made for domestic interiors circa 1870–1890. The underside bears a faint pencil inscription potentially referencing a residence or early owner. This clock exemplifies the hybridization of Eastern and Western design elements characteristic of late Victorian Chinoiserie, executed with restraint and precision. Its unusual pagoda top and architectural elegance distinguish it as both a timekeeping instrument and a decorative object of considerable charm. Measures: 11.25" h x 6" w x 4" d.
