About the Item

A very chic antique French library four glass crystal regulator with Champlevé enamel decoration and bow front glass, circa 1890. The four sides are glazed with beveled glass to allow the mercury compensated pendulum to be seen gently swinging and the movement to be seen. The top and base are of the most beautifully variegated, specimen green onyx. The metal work is finely gilded. Beautifully prepared in our workshop, ready for you to display. The dial is porcelain enamel on copper with pretty floral swags and blued steel hands. The French movement is by Samuel Marti and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. The mercury compensated pendulum is original and is designed to compensate for temperature effects. The mercury is contained in sealed vials rather like a thermometer. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a coiled gong. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean with some minor wear and discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition just some tiny nibbles to the winding holes. The glass is very good, just 2 very small chips to the rear door. The onyx is also very good, some nibbles to the edges and a light crack on the left hand side lower front. Samuel Marti mark on the movement backplate Complete with original pendulum and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. Dimensions of clock: Height 14 1/4", width 8 1/4", depth 6 1/2" Height 36 cm, width 21 cm, depth 16 cm.

Wear consistent with age and use. Fully working and tested. Gilding is good with slight wear. Glass is good, 2 tiny chips to rear door. Enamel is very good. Dial is very good, slight nibbles to the winding holes. Onyx is good with nibbles to edges, light crack on front lower left.

A magnificent Renaissance style clock by the renown Parisian clockmaking firm of Le Roy &Fils. Beautifully modelled in finely gilded bronze and finely decorated with exquisite polychrome champlevé enamel. The case is formed with an arched swan neck pediment surmounted by a turret with elaborate finial. To the sides are charming figures of cherubs clutching the baluster turned pillars. A third cherub is seated above the dial. The dial is also gilded bronze with champlevé enamel and is complete with original finely blued steel hands. The clock is decorated in the round with a frosted glass rear door. Please note that this type of clock does not have a glazed bezel to cover the dial. The French movement is of high quality and is by Vincenti et Cie. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is particularly good with only minor wear where the clock has been handled and some light marks and discolouration. The rear most bun feet are missing however the clock sits very well without them. Rear frosted glass has some marks. Enamel is very good. Established by Basile Charles Le Roy in 1785, the firm of Le Roy et Fils became a well-established and renowned clockmaker. Basile had been Napoleon's master clockmaker, and along with his son Charles-Louis, he worked for Princess Pauline and the Duke de Bourbon as well. Examples of the firm's work are included in all of the major world collections. The firm was located at the Palais Royale from 1785, the year of its founding, through the death of Charles-Louis at Versailles in 1865. A shop was opened in London, in 1854 at 296 Regent Street under the name of Le Roy and Son. The name was later changed to Le Roy and Fils...

This colorful pedestal clock has been crafted from fine red marble and green onyx, and beautifully decorated with gilt bronze (ormolu) and champlevé enamel. While a popular crafts material in ancient times, onyx was largely forgotten about until its rediscovery in the mid-19th century in Algeria by a French marble-worker called Delmonte. Onyx became highly fashionable in France following this discovery, and it was used to create a variety of decorative art objects. The clock features a green onyx cube-shaped case, which is surmounted by a slightly projecting red marble top. This top is fringed with champlevé enamel drapery-like motifs, with gilt bronze drop-finials. The case is mounted on its front with a circular dial, which features a central floral champlevé enamel motif, encircled by black Arabic Numerals.
