English Bracket Clock with Silver Plated Dial, London, circa 1800
About the Item
Bracket Clock
London
wood, brass
around 1800
Dimensions: H x W x D: 46 x 27 x 17 cm
Description:
English bracket clock in an ebonised "bell-top" wooden case with a carrying handle attached to the top.
The typical box-shaped case is glazed on all sides and thus provides a clear view of the solid brass movement.
Equipped with a spring balancer via steel strings and fusee, the movement runs for just over a week when fully wound. The rate is regulated by means of a verge escapement and the short pendulum on the back. A bell is struck on the hour.
The silver-plated dial in the shape of an arch has Roman hour and Arabic minute markings. The blued steel hands ensure that the time is easy to read against the light-coloured background. The striking mechanism can be switched off using the lever located in the arched segment.
The clockmaker's signature is engraved with impressive finesse: J.Johnson London. Although the engravings are covered with black shellac, the fineness of the engravings means that the finest curves can only be recognised on closer inspection.

Eureka Clock Company, London. Dial Clock
Located in Amersham, GB
A superb example of a Eureka wall clock made c1911.
The electromagnetic movement is regulated by a large, slowly oscillating bi-metallic balance wheel, with the correct battery these clock will run for the duration of the battery life. Housed in a mahogany dial clock case with turned dial frame and brass bezel, the movement is visible through a cut out in the dial so the oscillation can be seen. The movement is numbered 5676 and stamped with the patent no 14614/1906 Made in England. The dial retains its original painted finish (cracked in places).
This is the only model of wall clock Eureka made and is one of the rarer designs as they mostly concentrated on mantel clocks.
The Eureka clock...
