About the Item

Antique 19th c. Japanese Shaku Dokei Hanging Stick Pillar Wall Clock Here I'm offering a very old Japanese stick clock or Shaku-Dokei. The wood case has a removable glazed hood with a lift-out front door, two glass panels to the sides, a scale at the front and a drawer for the key at the bottom. The hardwood case is made of solid rosewood and it shows beautiful grain of the wood. Mounted to the backboard is the gilt-brass going movement with finely engraved, turned and spoked gear work, turned brass baluster columns at the corners, a large balance wheel escapement that is regulating the time keeping. A weight inside the slim body drives the one-day time mechanism. This Japanese stick clock measures 15.5 inch long. The engraved gilt-bronze time scale is fastened top and bottom by a large turned screw, has an engraved brass scale set at the edge, has engraved 'hour' characters on shaped plates. The pierced and engraved hand is carried by the weight and points to the different characters as it descends through the day. It follows the Japanese sequence of striking two series of nine to four alternating. This is a clock made in 19th century and still in good working order. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. A high quality Japanese stick clock is highly desirable and extremely rare. Once in a while, one may appears in high end auctions, such as Sotheby's or Christie's. (sold over $8,500 before premium) So if you have been looking for a Japanese stick clock, please consider the one we are offering here.
