Regency Davenport Desk Flame Mahogany 1830s Georgian Freemans Fine Country House
By Jeremiah and William Freeman, William Freeman
Located in London, GB
A beautiful, special and very rare flame mahogany Georgian Davenport in wonderful condition. Made by heralded furniture makers Freemans of Norwich, most likely in the 1830s, this fabulous and very much still highly usable Davenport will add superb quality, beautiful colour and bygone sophistication to any interior.
Beautifully crafted from flame mahogany, this Davenport is extremely solid and reassuringly heavy. It features a sliding locking desktop ideal for storing a laptop and papers, four large locking drawers to the left side with dummy drawers to the right and a pull-out inkwell drawer complete with ink bottle. A beautiful and extremely rare feature are the pair of concealed slide-out candle holder ledges, much-needed for late-night 19th Century letter writing – this is the only Davenport we know of to have these.
The sloping desk is adorned with the original racing green leather centrepiece with gold embellishments and has a bordered flat upper ledge. The front is decorated with four beautiful Corinthian carvings, most likely by William Freeman snr, who was renowned for his superb carving work. It has an impressive and imposing, shapely, Romanesque base and is set on attractive gadroon-mounted wheels for ease of movement.
The drawers and dummy drawers have beautiful handles and brass-fronted locks and inside the desk are two opening upper drawers and two lower dummy drawers (where the inkwell slides behind). It has the Freemans stencil to the underside of one the drawers and has pencil marks underneath the base which appears to read “Palmer SC23”, which we haven’t been able to definitively trace but might indicate that it was built for General Charles Palmer, MP for Bath in the early 19th Century, who was married in 1823.
Freemans of Norwich were a family of celebrated furniture makers based in the city around the first half of the 19th Century – father William and sons...

ANGLO-INDIAN AND CEYLONESE BOXES: Anglo Indian boxes were made in India for the English residents from the early part of the 18th century. They were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the nineteenth century they were imported more commercially, although not in any significant numbers until the middle decades. They were very highly valued, especially the early ones, to the extent that the designs were copied on late 19th and early 20th century tins.
Anglo-indian Boxes normally consist of 3 main types:-
(1) Most of the best and highest quality Anglo-Indian boxes in the 18th and 19th Centuries were made in Vizagapatam, India, renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship in using ivory and tortoiseshell and lac decoration. These are referred to as ‘Vizagapatam Boxes...

19th Century Victorian Writing Slope/ Travel Desk Box, Brass Bound, UK ca. 1815
Located in Lichtenberg, AT
Impressive Victorian writing slope or travel desk - attributed to the famous company of Thompson - from the period around 1800 - 1815 in the United Kingdom. This fantastic Captain’s campaign writing slope dates back to the Napoleonic wars. Well constructed out of solid mahogany with screwed down mount re-enforcements, brass banding, and inset carrying handles at each end, this outstanding travel desk box was designed to withstand the harsh maritime life at sea. The exterior of this Victorian travel box shows an attractive mahogany grain, beautiful colour, and a lovely pleasing patina. There are a couple of old indented scars to the lid along with the usual minor surface scratching, but these imperfections confer it an absolutely unique charme. The box has a tri-fold operation, opening to reveal a secondary smaller writing surface for quick use, then opening again to reveal the main slope fitted with a green felt writing surface which is in reasonable condition and compliments the original interior. When it is completely opened you have two storage compartments underneath. The original lock works smoothly with the original key. The original interior is nicely fitted out with a dark green leather drop-down section in the lid which features four memoire pockets. This section can additionally be lowered to reveal a document wallet...
