About the Item

Changeable picture frame to the front From our accessories collection, we are delighted to offer this Silver Mounted Desk Inkwell and Clock. The Desk Inkwell of pyramid shape with a cut glass star base mounted in sterling silver with a travel clock fitted into the top of the lid. The front of the Inkwell features a small square frame which allows the user to insert a photograph currently housing an image of a 1937 Talbot Bl105 Sports Roadster. The Lid flips up to show the time when sat on the desk and also sits flush closing the inkwell when travelling. Located in the lid is a removable pocket watch with silver dial and gilt numerals. The Silver is hallmarked sterling silver, Birmingham by the maker John Grinsell and Son and dated 1909 towards the end of the Art Nouveau period and the early 20th century. Literature Mark Goodger 25th Anniversary Catalogue page 47 John Grinsell & Son originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne. When the partnership was dissolved in 1871 John Grinsell started a new business with his four sons (Thomas Bywater Grinsell, James Erazmus Grinsell, Lorenzo Grinsell and Joseph Charles Grinsell) known as John Grinsell & Sons. The company operated out of Victoria Works, 57 tower street St. George’s, Birmingham and they had showrooms in London and Glasgow. In 1905 the firm was changed to John Grinsell & Sons Ltd and was eventually purchased by Barker Ellis & Co Ltd. Sterling Silver refers to the alloy of metal containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper or zinc. Sterling Silver objects are stamped with the 925 mark to confirm their authenticity.
