Charles X Gothic Revival Gilt and Patinated Bronze Inkwell

About the Item

Of rectangular shape, cast with gothic style arcading, the removable top depicting a fallen knight adjacent to a broken column and opening to two wells. In the early 19th century, the Romantic movement brought the Middle Ages back into vogue. 'The Genius of Christianity' by Chateaubriand (1802), 'Cathedral Antiquities' by J. Britten or 'Notre-Dame de Paris', the famous novel by Victor Hugo published in 1831, all served to accentuate this trend. Thus, from the reign of Charles X, medieval style spread throughout France and is reflected in paintings, decorative arts, and the forms of numerous objects adorned with arcades, portals, buttresses, clovers, and other neo-Gothic patterns, such as our inkwell.
