About the Item

Antique Writing Box made by David Edwards who was awarded two royal warrants from King George IV and Queen Victoria. The fabulous writing box is veneered in figured mahogany with strong squared brass edging and stringing in the front and top. The sides are fitted with campaign flush fitting brass handles with the top having a vacant brass initial plate and engraved lock barrel with the name: W Muckleston The interior of the writing slope features a gold tooled black leather writing surface and continue brass stringing with brass dot around the edge of the open box typical of David Edwards workshop. Both the upper and lower part of the writing slopes lift to reveal storage spaces underneath, with the upper half housing three hidden secret drawers! There is a secure drawer to the side which can be accessed by removing the brass retaining pin located in the right hand edge of the open box. The brass pin has another use! Underneath the left inkwell is a small hole in the base of its compartment. Pushing the pin into the small hole will cause a false wall in the top storage compartment to spring forward, revealing three small drawers. This writing box comes complete with its two silver plated travelling Inkwells, has two working locks and tasselled keys. David Edwards of 21 King Street, Bloomsbury Square was Writing Box and Case maker to the Royal family and inventor of the patent military travelling case. He also made tea chests, jewelry boxes, sewing boxes and canteen cases of the highest quality. He and his brother Thomas were also known to have worked from James Street and Orange Street. Edwards was known for using the highest quality timbers, intricate inlaid brass, decorative handles and complex mechanisms for secret compartments. He was bought out by Asprey in 1859 and had two royal warrants from King George IV and Queen Victoria.
