About the Item

This exquisite “Crabe” pâte de verre glass paperweight, by Amalric Walter and Daum Nancy is decorated with a relief of a reddish-brown crab poised upon a bright contrast of green and yellow algae, known as fucus. The charming creature, who looks upward upon the viewer in a benign, friendly manner, is expertly rendered in the deepest reds, tinged with brownish hues and accented with lovely yellow to liven his knobbly frame. The small eddy, the swell of algae green water upon which he sits, is wonderfully shaped and elevated, to give the lovely crustacean a substantial perch. Product Details: Item #: YP-21491 Artist: Amalric Walter and Daum Nancy Country: France Circa: 1910 Dimensions: 2" height, 7" width, 6" depth Materials: Pate de Verre Glass Signed: DAUM NANCY with the Cross of Lorraine Literature: Amalric Walter (1870-1959), by Keith Cummings, Kingswinford: Broadfield House Glass Museum, 2006, p. 26, cat. no. 32. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: French artists like Monet and Gaugin discovered the "emerald coast" of Brittany in the 1880s. Gaugin and others captured scenes of seaweed harvest, whereby "Goemoniers'" quietly performed the backbreaking work of raking, drying and burning massive stacks of seaweed.
