George III Thomas Weeks Paperweight of Cupid Riding a Lion

About the Item

A magnificent quality and very rare English George III or Regency white marble, patinated bronze and ormolu paperweight by the eminent maker Thomas Weeks of Tichborne St. London. On a rectangular Carrera white marble base with canted corners and with ormolu beading within a moulding. Set on the base is a an ormolu plate on which stands a superbly cast, chased and finished Lion saddled with classical drapes and a girth made from laurel. Sitting upon the lion's back is a seated figure of the winged cupid in fire gilt ormolu holding up a tablet on which is engraved "Omnia Vincit Amor" or "Love conquers all". It is possible to see the hand finishing of the Graveur on the lion where the lines run down his coat to provide texture to the piece and to his mane. The same work can be seen on the body of the cupid. Thomas Weekes was the owner of the Weekes Museum in Titchbourne Street and is famous for the fine and diverse objets d'art, clocks and automatons he sold from there drawing on the finest English and French craftsmanship and design. Thomas Weeks (1743-1834) established his museum of mechanical curiosities in Tichborne Street from 1788, until 1834. Weeks followed the fashion established by James Cox and Henri Maillardet (of Jaquet Droz) for exhibiting highly ornamental automaton clocks as part of London's trade exhibitions. A magnificent and very rare piece, circa 1800.
