About the Item

Vintage sculptural paperweight features swirling structure of controlled bubbles, encased inside a clear glass layer in sommerso technique. The piece has elongated egg shape with soft, rounded edges, that directs the eye towards the central design element. Colorful fused glass in pastel blue, pink, and off-white colors forms abstract patterns, raising from the base of the paperweight and encompassing its curves, accentuate the shape of the piece, and slightly iridescent finish on the surface add color and visual interest to the piece. The piece is signed and dated in etching (GES 92) on the side near the base. Founded in 1978 in Seattle’s famed Pike Place Market, but moved to the historic Ballard neighborhood later on, Glass Eye Studio is one of the oldest and largest privately-owned hot shops in the country; it served as a training ground for some of the most famed glass artists of the Pacific Northwest. The studio is led by its creative director and designer, Piper O’Neill. They are represented by various galleries nationwide, including Shops at Corning Museum of Glass.

Early Hiroshi Yamano Art Glass Sculpture or Paperweight, 1988
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Early Art Glass sculpture by Hiroshi Yamano features a grouping of raising controlled air bubbles in the center of a clear glass disc object. The bubbles are partially enveloped by pale green, pink, and blue colored glass layers that are flowing around and through the central structure. The underside is polished flat, adding clarity to the sculpture and emphasizing the use of negative space in the composition. The sculpture is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the underside; it can be used as a paperweight, if desired. It is contemporary to Yamano's famous "From East to West" series, that he started in the late 1980s, while he was a graduate student at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The sculpture was created in 1988; it is evocative of flowing water and underwater views. While we don't think that the sculpture is a part of the series, it is an important early work and a reflection on his studies. Hiroshi Yamano (b. 1956) is recognized as one of Japan's foremost and innovative glass artists. He attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, the Tokyo Art Institute, and Penland School of Crafts (where he served as an assistant), before receiving his Masters in Fine Arts degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, in 1989. Yamano began working with glass after seeing an exhibition of Scandinavian glass in Kyoto. At California College of Arts and Crafts he studied under Marvin Lipofsky, learning the creative aspects of glass. In 1986 he worked as an instructor at Leon Applebaum...
