About the Item
Vintage colorful paperweight features white, pink, powder blue, and cobalt blue glass stripes fused in concentric manner. Harmonious color palette allows the use of bright colors together without the colors clashing or overpowering each other. The colored core is encased in clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and dimension to the piece.
While many of Dunlavy paperweights tend to resemble St. Clair Glass stylistically and are signed with hot stamp, this piece is clearly made in studio art glass traditions and is hand signed in etching by the artist instead of stamping.
Monte Dunlavy trained at and worked for Blenko Glass in West Virginia until 1966; afterwards he worked for St. Clair Glass, where he worked with Charlie Gibson, Jim Davis, and a few other glass artists. Later he worked at Indiana Glass in Dunkirk, IN, until the factory closed; he opened his own studio in Portland, IN, and operated it until he retired from glassblowing.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

Vitrix Hot Glass Studio Op Art Paperweight, New York Art Glass
By Thomas Kelly
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Rare Op Art paperweight was hand blown in elongated ovoid shape. The colored rounded central gather has evenly distributed swirls of blue glass with randomly added yellow pigment placed in abstract, graphic pattern, with the whole structure enclosed in clear glass in sommerso technique. Subtle reflections of the central colored core in clear glass part of the paperweight add complexity and visual interest to otherwise minimal piece.
The paperweight is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom.
