Monte Dunlavy Striped Paperweight, American Studio Art Glass

About the Item

Vintage colorful paperweight features white, pink, powder blue, and cobalt blue glass stripes fused in concentric manner. Harmonious color palette allows the use of bright colors together without the colors clashing or overpowering each other. The colored core is encased in clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and dimension to the piece. While many of Dunlavy paperweights tend to resemble St. Clair Glass stylistically and are signed with hot stamp, this piece is clearly made in studio art glass traditions and is hand signed in etching by the artist instead of stamping. Monte Dunlavy trained at and worked for Blenko Glass in West Virginia until 1966; afterwards he worked for St. Clair Glass, where he worked with Charlie Gibson, Jim Davis, and a few other glass artists. Later he worked at Indiana Glass in Dunkirk, IN, until the factory closed; he opened his own studio in Portland, IN, and operated it until he retired from glassblowing.
