About the Item

A playful yet refined work of Murano glass artistry, this "Acquario in vetro di Murano" aquarium paperweight by master glassmaker Cristian Tagliapietra captures a timeless moment of curiosity. Entirely handcrafted in his Murano glass studio using the traditional lampwork technique, the piece depicts a sleek black cat poised above a crystal-clear fishbowl containing a vivid red fish, suspended in a pool of translucent aqua blue. The composition balances lightness and tension—Tagliapietra’s hallmark ability to infuse narrative into glass. This piece exemplifies the Venetian tradition of lampworked sculpture, where rods of glass are shaped in the flame with remarkable precision. Lampwork is a centuries-old Venetian glassmaking method in which rods of colored and clear glass are melted and shaped using the flame of a small torch (historically, an oil lamp—hence the name). The artisan works directly in the flame, manipulating molten glass with tools to create intricate details, figures, and miniature scenes inside crystal-clear vessels. Each detail—from the feline’s arched back and curling tail to the fish’s animated expression—demonstrates the control and delicacy of the master’s hand. The clarity of the glass allows the scene to read almost as a miniature world captured in time, while the bold contrast of black and red against the clear sphere gives the work striking visual presence. The paperweight comes with a guarantee of authenticity hand-signed by Tagliapietra. Both a collector’s piece and a whimsical accent, it reflects the lineage of Murano glassmaking while showcasing the individuality of a contemporary master.
