About the Item

Striking, complex art glass sculpture or paperweight features fused central core with controlled bubbles, multi-layered pigments, and dichroic glass that is encased in clear glass layer in sommerso technique. The piece has unique biomorphic shape that supports and accentuates the organic central design. The sculpture is signed and dated in etching on the side near the base with "Milropa 77", artist initials, and what is possibly design number. Rare, hard to find example of American studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector. Milropa Studios was founded in 1975 by Steven Mildwoff, an early studio glass artist, Ron Coles, and Paul Seide. The name was an acronym for Mildwoff – Ron – Paul. Milropa rented space in Bent Glass Works factory in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York, owned by Mildwoff's father. Paul Seide designed the original production line, consisting primarily of paperweights. Ron Coles left the studio in 1977. Internationally recognized artist David Huchthausen joined Milropa Studios as the Design Director in December of 1978, when he returned to the United States following two years in Vienna on a Fulbright Research Scholarship. The production crew at Milropa included several glass artists who achieved recognition in their own right, such as Gary Beecham, who had worked as Huchthausen's assistant in Austria, and John Brekke. Milropa Studios closed in September of 1980 after Huchthausen accepted a Professorship in Tennessee. Both Seide and Huchthausen were later associated with Urban Glass: New York Center for Contemporary glass, that for many years was influencing the character and shape of American studio glass movement. Paul Seide (b. 1949) has developed a unique type of glass sculpture that utilizes scientific and electronic technology realized in beautiful modernist shapes. His famous neon sculptures are activated by transmitted radio signals. Seide developed this technology after many years of experimentation. Paul Seide's work can be found in the collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, Toledo Museum of Art, Musee des Arts Decoratifs Switzerland, The National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto, and the Wheaton Museum of Glass.
