About the Item

This engraving represents the National Assembly in the night of August 4 and 5, 1789 realized by Isodore Stanislas Herman after the work of Charles Monnet.It depicts the abandonment of privileges decided by the national assembly. This assembly was presided by M. Chapelier. This plate is the 4th on 15 of the series of the main events of the revolution. On this engraving, the inscriptions "the law and the king" and the three flowers of lilies of the blazon of the legend are crossed out. It is the same of the flowers of lily and the crown present at the top of the engraving. Isodore Stanislas Helman is a French engraver of the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth century. He attended the free school of drawing and then started engraving. He is known for the realization of the plates of the principal days of the revolution realized according to the work of Charles Monnet. Charles Monnet is a French painter, draftsman and illustrator of the eighteenth century. He was named first prize of the Royal Academy. He was also appointed painter to the king. This wonderful engraving belongs to a set of three engravings representing children's games. This series dates from the 18th century. It consists of the game of hide and seek, the game of the four corners and the game of the ox leg. The scene depicted here is immersed in an abundance of nature. In the centre is a young girl walking away with her eyes poorly concealed. A young man is also walking away in the opposite direction, holding a handkerchief in his left hand. Behind them, seven other girls are sitting down and seem to be paying no attention to the two young men in the foreground. In the background is a bust resting on a pillar, all decorated with roses.
