Murano Art Glass Picture Frame with Multicolor Murrine
About the Item
This beautiful Murano art glass picture frame was hand-crafted in Italy in the 1990s. Murano mosaic colorful Murrine plaques adorn the picture view of the frame, which features an L-shaped clear Plexiglass framing. The Murrine glass panels come in a large variety of colors and are incredibly glossy. There is no visible maker's mark.
The frame is in excellent condition, with no pronounced signs of wear.
Measurements:
Overall: 5.13 in wide (13 cm) x 2 in deep (5 cm) x 7.07 in high (18 cm).
View (picture size): 2.94 in wide (7.5 cm) x 4.75 in high (12 cm).
Note: Murrine (singular: murrina) are colored patterns or images made in a glass cane that are revealed when the cane is cut into thin cross-sections. Murrine can be made in infinite designs from simple circular or square patterns to complex detailed designs to even portraits of people. One familiar style is the flower or star shape which, when used together in large numbers from several different canes, is called millefiori.
Murrine production first appeared in the Middle East more than 4,000 years ago and was revived by Venetian glassmakers on Murano in the early 16th century.
