Concordance I, a glass & silver woven standing sculpture by Cathryn Shilling
About the Item
'Concordance I' is a unique sculpture by the British artist, Cathryn Shilling, created from kiln-formed fused glass with Nickel Chromium.
Appearing as if woven from canes of shimmering silver, Condordance I is an ambitious sculptural work. Initially created from layers of clear glass canes, the final finish of nichel chromium, adds a sumptuous appearance. Highlighting every fold of this luxurious 'cloth' the embellishment adds refinement and poise.
Shilling experiments with layering and fusing glass to produce beautiful one-off sculptures. Her innovative pieces push the material beyond our usual comfort zones. Glass rods are woven together like fabric, mimicking the flexibility and movement of cloth. The apparent frailty of the glass is balanced by the strong dynamic forms and differing levels of light pick out the various strands making up each unique piece.
Cathryn Shilling began her arts career as a graphic designer but went on to study glass after moving to Connecticut with her family. On returning to the UK she studied kiln formed glass at Kensington and Chelsea College and blown glass with Peter Layton at the London Glassblowing Workshop. She set up studio in London in 2007 from where she has gone on to create a huge body and variety of work.
Shilling experiments with colour and technique to produce beautiful one off sculptures. Her innovative pieces push the glass beyond our usual comfort zones. With some sculptures, glass rods are woven together like fabric, mimicking the flexibility and movement of cloth. The apparent frailty of the glass is balanced by the strong dynamic forms, differing levels of light picking out layers of colour. With other works, bubbles are trapped in swathes of watery hues. Her colour palette and choice of forms are very much informed by the various natural states in which water is found: icebergs, waterfalls and whirlpools for example.
Shilling’s work has been collected and widely exhibited internationally including: Ireland Glass Biennale 2019 at Dublin Castle The 3rd Session of China·Hejian Craft Glass Design & Creation Exhibition and Competition, Ming Shangde Glass Museum, Cangzhou City, Hebei Province, China 2019 TACTILE at Glazenhuis, Lommel, Belgium New Aquisitions 2017 at Glasmuseum Lette, Coesfield, Germany Peter Bremers & Cathryn Shilling: A Two Person Exhibition at Schiepers Gallery in Belgium The CGS Jubileum 20th Anniversary Exhibition at Etienne Gallery, Oisterwijk, Netherlands The Taos Art Glass Invitational New Mexico, USA BODYTALK at the Glasmuseet, Ebletoft, Denmark East-West Artists Exhibitions in Kyoto, Japan and London.
She has exhibited at the British Glass Biennale in 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019 and in 2017 her collaboration with Anthony Scala won the Craft & Design Award. She has twice exhibited as a finalist in the Emerge Juried Kiln-glass Exhibition at Bullseye Projects, Portland, Oregon, USA.
In 2013 Shilling won the international Warm Glass Artists Prise and has twice been nominated for the SUWA Garasuno-Sato Glass Prise and several times for the Arts & Crafts Design Award. In 2015 she was number 4 in the Glassation list of ‘The Most Game-Changing Female Glass Artists’ and number 25 in the Graphic Design Hub’s list of ‘The 30 Most Amazing Glass Artists Alive Today’. She was winner of the V&A’s ‘Inspired By’ award.

Odysseus, a unique black hand-blown glass sculpture by Cathryn Shilling
By Cathryn Shilling
Located in London, GB
Odysseus, is a unique black glass sculpture by the British artist Cathryn Shilling. A handblown and free-form shaped glass sculpture with 'glass fabric' decoration worked onto the glass body while hot. A spectacular fusion of blown and kiln formed glass techniques incorporating Cathryn Shilling's signature woven glass. With her Cloaked Collection, Shilling takes mythical tragic figures as her inspiration. This piece is based on Odysseus.

Japanese Woven Bamboo Sculpture by Honda Syoryu
By Honda Shoryu
Located in Atlanta, GA
Entitled "Rhythm", this abstract sculpture was made by Japanese bamboo artist Honda Syoryu (Japanese, born 1951) in 2005. The free vertical form defies the limit of the traditional material bamboo as a rigid medium, and instead displays a nearly impossibly fluidity. Rooted in ages of tradition of Japanese basket weaving, the artist managed to break that ikebana tradition using bending and twisting techniques to create a pure sculptural work.
The work is a testament of how traditional craft can be reinvented into modern art form. Signed with carved signature "Syoryu" underneath.
The sculpture is displayed on a custom-made stand and can be appreciated from all angles. It comes with its original box and cloth, with label and Japanese inscription as shown.
Provenance: Purchased in 2005 from Tai Modern...

About
Lalique Glass
René Lalique (1860-1945) began his career as a jewellery apprentice at the age of 16, and by 1881 he was a freelance designer for many of the best-known Parisian jewellers. In 1885, he opened his own workshop on Place Gaillon in Paris, the former workshop of Jules Destape. In 1887, Lalique opened a business on Rue du Quatre-Septembre, and registered the "RL" mark the following year. In 1890, he opened a shop in the Opera District of Paris. Within a decade, Lalique was amongst the best-known Parisian jewellers.
In 1905, Lalique opened a new shop at Place Vendôme which exhibited not only jewellery, but glass works as well. It was close to the shop of renowned perfumer François Coty; in 1907, Lalique began producing ornate perfume bottles for Coty. The production of glass objects began at his country villa in 1902, and continued there until at least 1912. The first Lalique glassworks opened in 1909 in a rented facility in Combs-la-Ville, which Lalique later purchased in 1913. In December 1912, Lalique hosted an exhibition of Lalique Glass—as his glass would come to be known—at the Place Vendôme shop. During the First World War, the glassworks produced mundane items in support of the war effort. In 1919, work began on a new production facility in Wingen-sur-Moder, which opened in 1921. From 1925-1931, Lalique produced 29 models of hood ornaments; a mermaid statuette first produced in 1920 was also later sold as a hood ornament. During the 1920s and 1930s, Lalique was amongst the world's most renowned glassmakers.
René Lalique died in 1945. His son Marc Lalique took over the business, operating initially as "M.Lalique" and later as "Cristal Lalique...
