About the Item

A rarely seen large / monumental scale stainless steel sculpture by David Lee Brown (1939 - 2016). Abstract form constructed of twenty-four 1.5" square polished steel bars of various lengths that twist, turn and fan out to create highly dynamic and 3D sculpture. Executed and polished by the artist himself. This sculpture was commissioned by United Airlines for their terminal at O'Hare airport in 1976. Photo of the sculpture in situ was provided by the wife of the artist, Andrea Brown. This sculpture is stamp signed and dated in two locations. The sculpture was originally standing in a tall cylindrical pedestal, hence the sides of the base are unfinished. We are offering this piece as-is and will let the future owner decided how best to present this masterpiece. The sculpture does stands on it's own, as you can see in the photos, however we recommend that the sculpture be placed in a weighted base for safety. Dimensions provided are overall. The round steel base measures 5.5" height x 13.5" diameter and is painted gray on the top. Similar in style to the monumental outdoor sculpture Brown has in Broward County, Florida at the entrance of the Fort Lauderdale Airport, which Broward County paid $250,000 for this commission in 1989. David Lee Brown was a professional sculptor living and working in East Hampton, New York. His education includes Cranbrook Academy of Art, NC State College of Design, and a Jose de Rivera apprenticeship. He was a tenured professor at Pratt Institute. A sculptor with many monumental sculptures around the world, Mr. Brown was a consultant with Walt Disney Imagineering for over a decade. Brown worked in direct metal utilizing modern techniques to investigate ideas unique to the 3-dimentional experience.
