Kroa Sculpture by Victor Vasarelly 1968

About the Item

Victor Vasarely – Kroa Black, 1968 – Geometric Aluminum Sculpture Created in 1968, Victor Vasarely’s Kroa Black is a rare and striking example of Op Art and geometric abstraction. This sculptural work consists of black anodized aluminum panels, each precisely composed with circular motifs on all visible faces. Though the form suggests a hollow volume, the core is actually a single solid wood block—concealed to heighten the optical illusion of weightlessness. Mounted on a chromed circular base, the cube appears to hover in space. The graphic interplay of circle and square, mass and void, plays directly into Vasarely’s exploration of visual perception and dimensional ambiguity. As one moves around it, static patterns seem to pulse and shift, drawing the viewer into a dialogue with space, light, and form. This particular design is part of Vasarely’s Kroa series, and the same configuration is exhibited at the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, underlining its significance within the artist’s body of work. Kroa Black exemplifies Vasarely’s fusion of art and science, surface and structure—hallmarks of his vision to democratize and modernize visual language. A powerful centerpiece for collectors of kinetic and optical art, this piece embodies the precision and play that define Vasarely’s enduring influence on 20th-century visual culture.
