About the Item

Unique abstract sculpture by Danish artist Egon Fischer (1935-2016). the large sculpture is made of welded iron and gold paint. To be placed on the floor or on a socket. Made in the 1960s by the artist and signed. In 1961 Egon Fischer started at the "Ex-school", where Paul Gernes taught welding. The encounter with the school's experimental attitude was decisive for his artistic development. From 1963 he participated in the Summer Exhibition, the first year with sculptures, which, in accordance with the ideology of the Ex-School, were destroyed after the exhibition. In the following years, F. produced welded metal sculptures with humorous titles such as Difficult thought on plinth and Rings in the iron. Characteristic of the early sculptures is the juxtaposition of variable form elements, which in their reference to both known and unknown things had a surprising, often humorous effect. F.'s sculptures were placed directly on the floor, or he integrated a plinth as part of the sculpture. In the outdoor exhibition An expansion of an urban environment in 1967, F. participated with the Ølkasse sculpture and Ternet tering sculpture, a series of sculptures where the element of repetition shows minimalist tendencies. The 1970s became a period in which an experimental and innovative sculptural expression resulted in a series of monumental decoration tasks, such as Blue plate sculpture, Hanstholm and the Sculpture bridge that connects Birkerød Town Hall with the library. Here, F. struck new notes in architectural-sculptural terms, where function and expression were resolved by integrating carved parts and colored flowers into the bridge's supporting structure. In the years that followed, several decorative tasks followed, such as the Pillar of Hercules, Ordrup, which expresses strength in a simple, tightly shaped arch, and A Glimpse of the Future, Ballerup, a pyramidal structure that gathers the surroundings' complex jumble of subway lines and architecture around it . F. works in an idiom that is characterized by imaginative originality with a clear sense of rhythmic organization. His early sculptures and reliefs are rich in contrasts. Organic forms alternate with elements reminiscent of machine parts, open forms with closed and box-like, with thin metal wires. In recent years, F. has moved towards a tighter, more concrete form. His preferred material is iron and corten steel, and an essential part of the sculptural expression is the painting in clear, clean colors, or monochrome black and grey, with very glossy surfaces
