After receiving his Masters Degree from Cranbrook in 1954 Hawaiian native Ben Goo (1922-2017) was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Italy, focusing on industrial design and sculpture and working with Italian sculptor Marino Marini. Hawaiian native Ben Goo earned his Masters Degree and Cranbrook Academy
Ben Goo is known for his elegant and austere carved forms in exotic wood and marble, which recall the beauty of the noted American sculptor, Isamu Noguchi. Pristine and meditative, Goo's forms are totemic and rooted in geometry and balance. Goo also experimented with new materials in two-dimensions. In this slick, lacquer and synthetic paint on aluminum, Goo places a simple circle above a horizontal rectangle set within a white rectangle. Such a flat, essential composition brings to mind the reductive geometry of Color Field painter Paul Reed, or the "Homage to the Square" series by Bauhaus artist Josef Albers. Rather than emphasizing the optical play of color to color, however, Goo softens his palette to pale blue, pink, and white, which elicits a poetic and soothing response.

"Emile Gilioli was born to a family on Italian shoemakers who had settled beside the Canal Saint-Martin. After the first World War, the family moved back towards Italy, settling in Nice.
In 1932, Gilioli took courses at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs de Nice, notably with the future artist Marie Raymond.
During the Second World War, Gilioli was mobilized in Grenoble where he passed the remainder of the conflict. He made the acquaintance of Andry Fracy, a conservationist at the Grenoble Musee des baux-arts and led him to discover cubism.
