Leda Low Table Sculpture After Salvador Dali, Fundació Gala-Salvador Dali

About the Item

During the 1030s in Paris, Salvador Dali surrounded himself with a circle of friends involved in the application of art to varied disciplines, above and beyond the study of pure pictorial art. Jean-Michel Frank, a furniture maker and decorator of recognized prestige in the Paris of those years, was on very good terms with Dali and together they worked on several ideas. In the 1990s a group of experts, led by Oscar Tusquets, set themselves the task of turning the furniture Dali had drawn for Jean-Michel Frank into reality. Amongst these items were the Leda chair and low table, taken from the painting “Femme à la tête rose” (1935). The prototypes were made by the sculptor Joaquim Camps and BD organized the production and exclusive world marketing. In 2009, for the 20th Anniversary of the death of Salvador Dali and BD Barcelona wished to add its special homage by producing a special limited edition of his fantastic furniture collection. All the finishing’s are based on black, with aged black patina on the casted brass, guaranteed by The Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation responsible for the painter’s rights. The black label collection came to market in a limited edition of 105 pieces (the age of Dali in 2009). "When we chose projects for furniture from the ideas with which Dali had filled his note pad for his work with Jean-Michel Frank, we had to imagine the colors which Salvador would have chosen to make his single-color drawings, and we did so remembering the preferences and obsessions of the maestro (gold, Carmin Schiaparelli). The furniture was really very much in Dali style, but difficult to combine in not absolutely surrealistic interiors. When we made a Leda chair with aged black patina for a special set-up and observed the enthusiastic reaction of the professionals, we were convinced that these crazy objects would look much less controversial in a decor if they were dyed black. From my extensive work with the Maestro I feel that this collection would meet his approval and I am absolutely sure that Gala would prefer it to the multicolor." Oscar Tusquets. All pieces of ironwork in this collection are made of brass. The Black Label Leda collection has an artisanal application of a special patina (metal dissolved in nitric acid) which is applied to a lightly heated surface accomplished with a gas blow torch. The reaction caused results in an irregular dark finish. Legs are in a cast varnish brass. Tabletop in brushed and varnished brass. Carrara marble egg on top. Black Label (Limited Edition): Structure in polished cast brass varnish or black patina without varnish (price upon request).

As shown by the small selection now produced and included in this catalogue, Dalí ’s work was not restrictes to the traditional furnishing elements, but included tap fittings, handles, door-pulls, printed fabrics and objets of indeterminate use. In the 1990s a group of experts, led by Oscar Tusquets, set themselves the task of turning the furniture Dalí had drawn for Jean-Michel Frank into reality. Amongst these items were the Leda chair...
