Nino Caruso, Abstract sculpture in glazed ceramic, Italy, 1974

About the Item

Nino Caruso ( Tripoli 1928 - Rome 2017 ) Abstract Sculpture in Black Glazed Ceramic. 1974, Signed and dated under the base. Italian ceramist, sculptor and designer, Nino Caruso was one of the protagonists of Italian artistic and creative life in the post-war period. His activity as a ceramist began in 1954; after graduating from the State Institute of Art in Rome, he exhibited in 1956 for the first time at the "L'incontro" Gallery together with Renato Guttuso. Unfortunately, after a few days a fire destroyed several works by both artists. In 1957 he exhibited for the first time abroad at the Jacopicef gallery; Starting in 1965 he began to use polystyrene to make casting molds into which he poured clay, revolutionizing his working method. Continuing to experiment, he creates sculptures in different materials, looking for a new relationship between sculpture and architecture. In 1966 he contributed together with Carlo Zauli, Pompeo Pianezzola, Alessio Tasca, Nanni Valentini and others to the establishment of the Italian Center of Art Productions (CIPA). After the dissolution of CIPA, from 1968 to 1985 he founded the Centro Internazionale di Ceramica based in his studio in Rome In 1970 he won the competition for the chair of ceramic design in Rome, where he would teach for fifteen years. From the mid-seventies, on the one hand, he collaborated frequently with some US universities, and on the other, thanks to the numerous visits to Japan, he learned a vast knowledge of ceramic techniques. In 1973 he won a prize at the International Ceramic Competition in Nagoya. He exhibits in a traveling personal exhibition in Kyoto at the Asahi Gallery, at the Tokoname Research Center and at the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo. This is the period in which the sculpture we see here was made, an essential but sophisticated work, which well expresses the author's character. The work is presented here in its beautiful original patina
