About the Item
A stunning pair of faceted optical lucite sculptures by renowned Italian artist and designer Alessio Tasca, circa 1970. Both sculptures are individually signed, exemplifying Tasca’s unique blend of modernist form and masterful materiality. The provided measurements correspond to the larger piece, emphasizing its substantial presence.
Born in Nove, Italy, in 1929, Alessio Tasca’s illustrious career spans ceramics, sculpture, and design. He first gained recognition at the 1949 V Italian Exhibition of Sacred Art in Milan and continued to impress with his work at the IX Triennale di Milano in 1951, where his “earthy” engraved dishes were championed by Gio Ponti. His artistic journey includes multiple participations in the prestigious Venice Biennale—beginning in 1952—where he showcased ceramics and majolica, earning acclaim and prestigious awards, including the 1st Prize in Decorative Arts in 1964.
In 1961, Tasca transitioned from the family workshop to establish his own atelier, focusing on large-scale unique sculptures that marked a return to his passion for sculptural form. His innovative use of materials and striking compositions have cemented his place in Italian art history.
Crafted from lucite, a pioneering plastic material developed in the early 20th century, these sculptures embody the material’s exceptional clarity, durability, and capacity to manipulate light. Lucite became a favored medium among designers and artists of the 1960s and 1970s for its ability to create luminous, modern forms that played with transparency and refraction.
During this era, the Op Art movement flourished, exploring optical illusions, geometric patterns, and visual perception—principles that resonate in Tasca’s faceted designs. These sculptures reflect the glamorous and experimental spirit of 1970s design, blending artistic innovation with high style.
An exquisite pairing that captures the optimism, boldness, and tactile beauty of the period, perfect for collectors and interiors seeking iconic mid-century modern glamour.
