About the Item

Pair of rare Mid Century Modern sculptural alabaster and marble elephant bookends were hand-carved in Italy. Dark grey marble, used for elephants' bodies, contrasts beautifully with white alabaster bases. Highly detailed carved elephants' bodies with subtle color variations in the marble create texture and visual interest and complement the minimal color palette of the pieces. The bookends were created to allow them to be displayed in two different ways - with elephants sitting on white bases and supporting the books with their feet and trunks, or with elephants standing on their feet with alabaster rectangles behind them as a sculptural decor objects. The bookends are signed with original distributor's (McCurdy's) paper stickers on both pieces and in etching "Italy" and model number on one of the pieces; they are in good vintage condition with light, age-appropriate signs of wear on edges. McCurdy's (formally McCurdy and Company) was a high-end department store in Western New Yok state area with the flagship store founded in Rochester, NY, in 1901. Creator: McCurdy's Department Store (distributor) - it might not be on the list
