About the Item

A fantastic, quite engaging Anagama art sculpture by American master potter/artist Peter Voulkos who is universally known for his abstract expressionist ceramic pottery pieces and sculptures. Voulkos often referred to these few, rare creations as his "dolls". They were typically constructed from scraps of clay cut from larger sculptures and combined into abstract expressionist figures loosely based on Japanese Haniwa figures. This work was wood-fired in his typical Japanese style and features multi-colored glazes and multifaceted textural surfaces. The sculpture was previously owned by one of Voulkos' closest friends (Voulkos only gave these pieces to special friends and guests of his studio) and is signed and dated (1990) by Voulkos on the underside/base. A unique and one of a kind piece. Would be a great addition to any collectors of Voulkos' work or Mid-Century Modern pottery/ceramics or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting. Peter Voulkos is widely considered to be the most important and impactful ceramists of the modern era. He won the Rodin Museum Prize at the first Paris Biennale in 1959 and was the winner of a Guggenheim fellowship in 1984. Voulkos received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997. He was made an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 2001. He also received six honorary doctorate degrees as well as three National Endowment for the Arts awards. His work can be found in many prominent collections and museums including: Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, Nagoya, Japan Albany Mall, Albany, New York American Museum of Ceramic Arts, Pomona, California The Anderson Collection at Stanford University, Stanford, California Archie Bray Foundation, Helena, Montana Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, Arizona Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, Arkansas Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada The Art Gallery, Paul Creative Arts Center, University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth, Australia Australian National Gallery, Canberra, Australia Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland Banff Centre, School of Fine Arts, Alberta, Canada Boise Art Museum, Boise, Idaho Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Philadephia Cincinnati Art Museum, Cinncinati, Ohio City and County of San Francisco, San Francisco, California City of Fresno, Fresno, California City of Highland Park, Illinois Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, State Fair Community College, Sedalia, Missouri David & Alfred Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois Den Permanente, Copenhagen, Denmark Denver Art Museum, Denver, Colorado Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines, Iowa Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan Elvehjem Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, M. Albert Leon Wilson Signed Mid-Century Modern Nude Female Abstract Sculpture
By Albert Leon Wilson
Located in Studio City, CA
A fantastic, quite whimsical, engaging Mid-century Modern abstract female nude sculpture by New York artist Albert Leon Wilson. This is one of the best pieces we have come across of his work. In the mid-1950s he relocated to Rochester, New York, where he worked until 1967 as an art director, illustrator, and photographer, winning over 20 graphic art awards from the Rochester Society of Communicating Artists. Afterward, he found his calling working with welded and bent metals and designing abstract sculptures often featuring figures and animals. He passed away in 1999. The sculpture is signed and dated (1968) with Wilson's traditional imprint/stamp. Wilson's work has been exhibited at the York State Craft Fair, Ithaca College, NY; Northeast Craft Fair, Am. She grew up in the artistic Silver Lake district near downtown Los Angeles amongst Mexican and Nisei Japanese immigrants. As a result, De Larios was heavily influenced by ancient American...
