Solar Storm Ruby Red over Gold, a linear patterned glass artwork by Kate Jones
About the Item
'Solar Storm Ruby Red over Gold' is a unique handblown and cut glass artwork by the British artist, Kate Jones of Gillies Jones.
In the artist's own words:
“This new body of work references both the evident structure of the landscape and the vast skies of the North York Moors. The rondel form in particular, gives me a 'canvas' to directly play with light and lines combined with layers of colour, whilst geometrically referencing the source that brings life to our world. Sunlight and its energies interact with our environment in a myriad of ways, which I have recently been studying, all of which, has left me with a sense of awe.
My day-to-day experience of life living and working in rural isolation, allows me to watch and contemplate this distant light fall upon the complex layers, textures and marks made by people working in the landscape. Illuminated and warmed by the sun’s rays, this stunning landscape has been carved and eroded by thousands of years of land management and the harsh northern elements.
The uplifting, visceral pleasure that glass as a material offers me as an artist to play with both light & colour, texture & form, I hope will be reflected in these pieces and that these 'Oculus' capture and invite, a sense of wonder for our complex world."
Created with Stephen Gillies, with whom Jones makes many works in collaboration, this exquisite collection of works are attributed solely to Jones, with the understanding that Gillies is the glassmaker (his driving force is the making of each piece to the best of his considerable ability) but where Jones, trained as a painter (having adapted her visual skill to mark making on glass) is the artist, breathing life into each artwork, giving each its unique beauty.
The partnership, established in 1995, continues to explore the unique qualities of the material and Stephen Gillies & Kate Jones have their work in the permanent collection of the V&A, and the specialist glass collections of The Museum for Modern Glass Coburg Germany, Broadfield House Glass Museum Dudley and Ebeltoft Glass Museum Denmark.
Gillies & Jones have also exhibited their objects in numerous exhibitions including touring with The British Council, The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa Japan & 8th Chenongi Craft Biennale, Korea & Taste, Geneva. Works are in the permanent collections of The Farringdon Collection Oxford, Bolton Museum & Art Gallery, Cartwright Hall Bradford, Cannon Hall Barnsley, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and National Museum Scotland.

Seashell Solar Chandelier, Contemporary Solar-Powered Lighting, Customizable
By Nina Edwards Anker
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Solar chandelier, a customizable solar-powered lighting installation for the off-the-grid living room, comprises photovoltaic modules that power LED bulbs to illuminate translucent seashells to provide ambient lighting. The piece aims to demystify PV technology by exposing its components in a legible manner, so that the electrical boards, wires and batteries of the PV modules are clearly visible and comprehensible.
Additionally, with a passing breeze, the chandelier becomes a wind chime. It also functions as a type of solar clock as it illuminates automatically at dusk, highlighting hourly solar and seasonal rhythms. The chandelier must be placed in front of a window to gather solar power. The Solar Chandelier lowers electric bills, eliminates wires and outlets, offers multi-directional ambient light, and casts patterns on surrounding surfaces like wallpaper. It can be customized to each setting.

Plume Solar chandelier, a customizable solar-powered lighting installation for the off-the-grid living room, comprises photovoltaic modules that power LED bulbs to illuminate feathers to provide ambient lighting. The piece aims to demystify PV technology by exposing its components in a legible manner, so that the electrical boards, wires and batteries of the PV modules are clearly visible and comprehensible. This off-the-grid solar-powered chandelier combines shimmering soft black feathers to counterpoint the reflective black photovoltaic panels.
It also functions as a type of solar clock as it illuminates automatically at dusk, highlighting hourly solar and seasonal rhythms. The chandelier must be placed in front of a window to gather solar power. The Plume Solar Chandelier lowers electric bills, eliminates wires and outlets, offers multi-directional ambient light, and casts patterns on surrounding surfaces like wallpaper. Solar Chandelier, Contemporary Capiz Shell Solar-Powered Lighting, Customizable

Hanging from strands of transparent wire, solar chandelier is made from photovoltaic modules that power LED bulbs to illuminate translucent materials of different kinds. The materials, size and height of the chandelier are customizable. Our team fabricates the entire piece in our studio at New Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where we have access to the necessary tools.
Solar chandelier is a way of investigating solar cells as perceptual devices for mediating light into designed spaces. This eco-friendly lighting design incorporates environmental technology while providing ambient lighting and projecting shadow patterns. The piece aims to demystify PV technology by exposing its components in a legible manner. With a passing breeze, the chandelier functions as a wind chime. It also functions as a type of solar clock; the translucent seashells illuminate automatically at dusk, highlighting biological solar rhythms and power.
In its mix of organic and technological materials, solar chandelier's translucent seashells illuminate in a manner that aims to be affective in its application of solar technology. The seashells are electrically illuminated after dark. In the daytime, they are lit from the light passing through the window in front of which the chandelier must be placed in order to gather solar power...
