Minimalist Abstract Sculptures

MINIMALIST STYLE

A revival in the popularity of authentic Minimalist furniture is rooted in history while reflecting the needs and tastes of the 21st century. Designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s aphorism that “less is more” influenced the evolution of 20th-century interiors with an emphasis on function and order. This was a shift from the 19th century, with its lavish Victorian decorating, and was spread around the world through design styles including Bauhaus and brutalism.

Yet Minimalism was present in furniture design long before the clean lines of modernism, such as in the simple and elegant utility of Shaker furniture. Although the Minimalist art movement of the 1960s and ’70s had little crossover with furniture design, artist Donald Judd was inspired by the Shakers in creating his own spare daybeds and tables from sturdy wood. (Judd, whose advocacy of symmetry also informed his architectural projects, furnished his Manhattan loft with unassuming but poetic works by iconic modernist designers such as Gerrit Rietveld and Alvar Aalto.)

Understatement rather than ornamentation and open space instead of clutter are central themes for a Minimalist living room and bedroom. As opposed to Maximalism, the focus for Minimalist furniture and decor is on simplicity and considering the design and purpose of every object.

Furnishings are usually made in neutral or monochrome colors and pared down to their essentials — think nesting coffee tables, sectional sofas and accent pieces such as ottomans. And Minimalist ceramics can help achieve a decor that is both timeless and of the moment. The organic textures and personalization of handmade craftsmanship associated with these works have served as a sort of anti-Internet to screen-weary decorators. That said, while the thoughtful ergonomics of Scandinavian modern furniture, with its handcrafted teak frames, are at home in Minimalist spaces, so are the quietly striking pieces by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa that employ industrial materials like stainless steel, aluminum and plastic.

Minimalist furniture is not for making flashy statements; it boasts subdued appeal and excels at harmonizing with any room. And, as it encompasses many different movements and eras of design, it also never goes out of style, owing to its tasteful refinement.

Kazimir Screen Set by Colé, 3 Abstract patterns, decor dividers inspired to Art
Located in Milan, Lombardy
Masterfully handcrafted in Italy, Kazimir screens, closed in a set composed by 3 single elements (Type A, Type B and Type C), are not only a perfect divider for minimalist or classic rooms, , but also a symbolic bridge, linking design to art, functionality to decoration. In fact the shapes of this screens are freely inspired on the figurative abstract works by the renowned painter Malevich, a pioneer of the geometric abstractionism of 20 the century Russian avant-garde. The geometric motif in black, white, red and green, of the abstract pattern is recalling the body of the characters in the renewed paintings named "Torso". One screen...

Minimalist Ceramic Sculpture, by Enric Mestre
Located in Antwerpen, VAN
Museum quality artwork by Enric Mestre, born 1936 in Valencia Spain. Mestre is recognized worldwide, won many international awards and has participated in numerous individual and collective exhibitions around the world. His sculptural objects seem sober spatial constructions: boxlike, slab built architectural structures of austere colours dominated by right angles. But appearances are deceptive: these objects have a poetic charm which saves them from only being rational and cold. Through dedication and commitment Mestre has pushed the technical boundaries of this demanding yet humble material, and helped elevate it to a sculptural art form in its own right. As one of the important artists of the Spanish school, his name is mentioned in the same breath as figures such as Jorge Oteiza...

ARIA TOTEM I, by Rebeca Cors
Located in Ciudad de México, CDMX
I. ABOUT REBECA CORS Rebeca Cors (México, 1988). Her work oscillates between sculpture and utility object, studying the limits and meeting points between these two concepts. The intention of her work is to question paradigms in order to reinterpret objects from It’s established forms.? As a result, her practice approaches sculpture as: Abstract Sculpture - and - Utility Sculpture. The materialized compositions embody simplicity and balance, inspired by anthropometric proportions and nature’s forms. Simplicity is not a lack of content – but  the synthesis of the complex. A balanced and simple composition conveys peace. The art work’s origin comes from a place of inner peace, the materials and hands that materialize the piece add the same intention – as a result, the works emanate and propagates this serenity. Human beings surround themselves with objects through their existence, some for simple necessity or function, and -these others- that virtuate the space they inhabit, transmitting emotions that words simple fall short to describe; emotions that lead us to a state of contemplative meditation, in which the world around us seems to disappear for an instant, time vanishes and we enter this intimate human-object ritual, where a dialogue with the sculptural piece begins, words are not necessary. All hand-made in Mexico. All Mexican...
