About the Item

This finely cast French hunt scene sculpture was crafted in the late 19th century and rendered in bronze with a rich toned patinated finish. In the dynamic and highly naturalistic style associated with Jules Moigniez (1835–1894), the composition features two hunting dogs, likely a setter and a pointer, poised in a moment of intense pursuit as they flush out a pair of quail from thick underbrush. The long-haired dog stands alert and poised, while the sleeker hound crouches forward, both sculpted with remarkable anatomical accuracy and expressive movement. The surrounding terrain, modeled with textured foliage and a pair of startled game birds, adds depth and energy to the tableau. The work is mounted on an integral oval base and displays a lively, light-catching patina that enhances the sculptural detail throughout. Measuring 16 inches wide by 7.5 inches deep and 7.75 inches high, and weighing approximately 14 pounds, this decorative animalier group is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. A striking piece ideal for display in a study, library, or sportsman’s interior, evoking the refined tradition of 19th-century French hunting art.
