19th century French Majolica Earthenware Rooster Signed By Paul Comolera, 1880s

About the Item

Magnificent earthenware rooster and its vase, made in France in the 1880s. This majolica composition is both a flower vase and a rooster sculpture. This superb earthenware piece, beautifully detailed, is hand-painted in a vibrant palette of red, blue, green, beige, and red. The rooster's pose is remarkable, dramatic and proud, with a plumed tail and a rounded chest. Signed on the base by the artist P. Comolera. Comolera was a student of the early sculptor Francois Rude and he was the teacher of Jules Moigniez, one of the more important sculptors of the Animalier school. Paul Comolera made his debut at the Salon in 1846 with a group called Golden Pheasants of China and continued to exhibit there until his death in 1897. Comolera’s bronzes...
