19th Century Pair of Chinese Guardian Lions in Red and Gold Lacquer

About the Item

We present you with this stunning pair of statues representing Chinese guardian lions, also known as lions of Fo, made in red and gold lacquer and painted wood. Their origins date back to the late 19th century. Chinese guardian lions or the lions of Fo are iconic mythical guardian creatures in Chinese culture. They are commonly depicted as lion-like figures, often in pairs, and are believed to possess protective and symbolic qualities. They are often associated with protection and good luck and are believed to ward off negative energy or evil spirits. Their presence is commonly seen in front of palaces, temples, and other important structures to provide security and prosperity. Furthermore, these lion-like creatures are typically depicted in pairs - one male and one female. The male lion is often shown with a ball or globe under its paw, representing supremacy over the world. The female lion is usually seen with a lion cub, signifying nurturing and protection.
