Art Deco Glazed Ceramic Panther Sculpture Signed E. Pierre for Atelier Primavera

About the Item

This refined and important Art Deco stylized ceramic Panther sculpture was realized in France for Atelier Primavera au Printemps, circa 1925. It offers an elegantly striding earthenware black panther with a white mottled glaze with one foot outstretched attached to a volumetric rectangular base. With its exquisite craftsmanship by one of the period's great ateliers and unmistakably modernist aesthetic, this piece is sure to delight discerning collectors of first rate Art Deco sculpture. The piece is signed "E. Pierre Primavera" and is in excellent vintage condition. Primavera was founded in 1912 by René Guilleré and Pierre Laguionie with the am to create modern decorative objet d'art more accessible to a burgeoning middle class. While it struggled during the war years Primavera gained traction shortly thereafter, achieving widespread acclaim and popularity during 1920s for its exquisitely crafted, patently high end Art Deco designs. Craftsmen and designed were recruited from abroad, and a ceramic factory purchased in Touraine to help satisfy the growing demand through rapid production; studios for glass and other mediums would follow shortly thereafter. The high end department store Le Printemps (managed by Laguionie) fervently promoted Primavera, submitting the firm's work to the Decorative Arts Salons, notably the exhibition of 1925, where the Primavera enjoyed its own pavilion.
