AUTHOR
Tarcisio TOSIN
Venetian ceramist, born Cles in 1904, Tarcisio Tosin completed his training at the Art Institute of Nove as a student of Roberto Rosati. After working with his father Marco, a ceramist at the 'Antonibon' manufactory in Nove di Bassano and a brief apprenticeship at the small 'Taddei' manufactory, he worked at various local manufactories. In 1914 the family moved to Verona where Tarcisio completed his studies at the local School of Art and found work, starting in 1918, at the 'Cassandrini' ceramics factory, run by his father. Here he met Alessandro Zarpellon and brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Pizzolotto. In 1926 he was given the post of director of the 'Borromeo' manufactory in Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore. The manufacture's production, in the years of Tosin's leadership, bears the mark, painted in black, of a princely crown in black with the superimposed words, 'ISOLA BELLA' underneath. In 1928 Tosin moved to Vicenza, where he took over the management of the 'Fratelli Brotto' ceramic factory, which he took over in 1932, assigning it the name 'La Freccia'. The new mark is represented by an arrow, drawn vertically, on either side of which appear the initials FS imposed by commercial agreement by retailer Faone Scardin. During the same years he also devoted himself to teaching as a lecturer of applied ceramics at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vicenza. His flair and imagination led him, in the 1930s, to make pottery with a humorous and popular flavor in which the technical and stylistic skills of the figures and the taste of a singular and cheerful palette stand out. He also makes some interesting futurist ceramics. In 1946 he was entrusted with the setting up of the First Vicenza Trade Fair. Beginning in 1950, as president of the Vicenza Craftsmen's Association, he served on the board of directors of the Vicenza Fair Board. Tarcisio Tosin worked until 1985 and died in Vicenza in 1999.
