French Art Deco Craqueleur White Ceramic Greyhound Signed by Charles Lemanceau

About the Item

This elegant Art Deco ceramic sculpture was realized in France, circa 1935. It depicts a stylized cubist rendition of a greyhound resting on its hind legs with its front legs straightened, showcasing its powerful musculature realized in cream ceramic (a signature material for Lemanceau) exhibiting a beautiful craqueleur. The greyhound serves as a visual analogy for the era's fascination with speed (a la aviation, automobiles etc.) as an emblem of progress. With its clean modernist lines and beautiful crackled glazed, this piece would be a winning addition to any side table or etagere in any style of interior from Classic Art Deco to contemporary. “l'Ecole des Arts aplliques”. He chose the last as his alma mater, even being allowed to advance to the second year right away and graduate earlier. Lemanceau graduated “l'Ecole des Arts aplliques” before beggining an apprenticeship at Printemps Primavera. In 1925, Lemanceau exhibited at Salon d'Automne, alongside Matisse and Le Corbusier. This greyhound represents an especially strong (and stunning) example of his practice. Excellent condition. Signed "Lemanceau" on the base. France, circa 1930. Dimensions: 12" H x 9" W x 3" D.
