About the Item

A plated bronze eagle sculpture by Argentine-born Mexican sculptor Marcelo Morandín. The ethereal sculpture depicts Mexico's national symbol and coat of arms, an eagle devouring a rattlesnake. Such symbol has many meanings for the Mexicans; for the Aztecs, it marked the place of foundation of Tenochtitlan; for the Europeans, it symbolizes the triumph of Good over Evil. The sculpture is placed over a stone cylindrical base. Eagle's dimensions (Without base): 47 x 43 x 16 cm. (18.5 x 16.9 x 6.3 inches). Marcelo Morandín (1933 - 1996) was born in San Martín, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He studied architecture at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and got his title at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In 1963, Morandín moved to Mexico and lived in the city of Xalapa, where he worked as an arts teacher and sculptor. "La Fundación de Tenochtitlán" was first introduced in 1986 as a monumental sculpture to be placed in front of the gates of Los Pinos, the former official residence of the Mexican heads of state (1935 - 2018).
