two (2) Meissen porcelain birds (bitterns), from 1743 model by German sculptor Johann Joachim Kändler (German, 1706-1774), each on a base of reeds and umbels, great colors, beautiful colors, exquisite French gilt bronze mounts, Dresden, Germany, 19th century MEASUREMENTS: 25.25" H x 10" W x 13.75" D Kändler was the most important modeller of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactury, and arguably of all European porcelain. He worked at Meissen for over 40 years, from 1731 until his death in 1775. bit·tern1 noun a large marsh bird of the heron family, typically smaller than a heron, with brown streaked plumage. The larger kinds are noted for the deep booming call of the male in the breeding season.
