About the Item
This Metallic Silver-Gray hand-built ceramic sculpture evokes a proud creature that walks and observes. A Modern TOTEM, abstract with an angled head on two middle bars, balanced on 4 legs. High fired in a gas kiln, the metallic glaze is made from an obsolete clay body and will likely never be made again. It is painted over and rubbed into the mottled texture before firing. Red iron from the clay body shows through the mottled surface. Truly one of a kind.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.

Matte Black Hand Built Ceramic TOTEM "Take a Bite" on Tripod Legs
By Helena Starcevic Ceramics

One of a trio of fully hand built ceramic TOTEMS in matte black under glazed stoneware. This one, "Take a Bite" has a small arc-like bite at the top. They each have their own personality which occurs when clay is hand-formed into shapes, connected together, and fired in a hot kiln. The surface is textured and coated with underglaze, giving the impression of black clay. Pictured below with 2 sister pieces: "Tall Feather" and "First Walk on the Moon...
