About the Item

A delightful and rare Austrian Wiener Keramik pair of pottery sparrows by renowned sculptor and ceramicist Michael Powolny (Austrian, 1871-1954) and dating from around 1907. Michael Powolny was an eminent figure in the arts in Austria. He was inspired and learned pottery from his father before studying ceramics at the Vienna Industrial Arts School in Znaim, Austria in 1894 and spent many years at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1906, along with artist Bertold Löffler, he formed the Wiener Keramik workshop which later was to become the Wiener Werkstatte. His work is considered both influential and important and is held in museum collections around the world. This delightful pair of pottery sparrows are modelled holding flowers in their beaks and were designed for Wiener Keramik in 1907. The birds sit on a flat unglazed base and are modelled joined together and they are molded and hand painted in black on a white ground with delighful detail but typifying the style of Powolny. The birds have an impressed Wiener Kermik, Gmunder Kermik marks to the base along with the number 66. We believe these are an original production pair as later models had date marks applied. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market In good condition with some very minor glaze chipping and rubbing.
