Natalie Surving, b.1938, Ceramic Iguana Temperance Jug Sculpture

About the Item

To confront her childhood fear of reptiles, Surving sculpted an iguana, which proved to be an epiphany that would lead her to a life of sculpting hyper-realistic reptiles. From miniatures to larger-than-life installations for museums and Disney attractions, with a few editioned collaborations with icons like Boehm along the way. This particular piece is a whimsical play on a temperance jug. Two surly iguanas guard a bug cork stopper that, in times past, would lead to libations. Signed with the artist’s monogram and dated on reverse, 1984.
