About the Item
This magnificent pair of hand carved wood and gilt swans represents an extraordinary example of Italian Empire period sculptural decorative art. Masterfully crafted in Lucca, renowned for its tradition of cabinetmaking and carving, these swans embody the elegance and grandeur typical of the Empire style.
Craftsmanship and Design:
The swans are entirely carved in wood in the round, demonstrating remarkable sculptural skill. Every detail, from the curve of the neck to the finely carved feathers, has been executed with precision and artistic sensitivity. The surface is entirely covered in gold leaf, giving the sculptures a luxurious and monumental appearance. The posture of the swans, with necks elegantly bent to the chest and wings spread, perfectly captures the majestic yet graceful essence of these birds. This representation underlines the allegorical importance of the swan in classical and neoclassical culture, symbolizing purity, grace, and transformation.
Provenance and Significance:
These sculptures come from an important Italian palazzo, where they originally formed part of a larger architectural element leading to the main staircase. Their presence in such a context underscores the prestige and symbolic value attributed to these works.
Versatility and Uses:
Given their execution in the round, these swans offer extraordinary decorative versatility. They can be appreciated as:
Central sculptures: Positioned on a table or pedestal in a salon or entrance hall.
Architectural elements: Incorporated into boiserie or as decoration above doors or fireplaces.
Staircase decorations: Placed at the beginning or end of a monumental staircase.
Ornaments for winter gardens: As decorative elements in interior spaces overlooking gardens.
Focal pieces in a library or study: To add a touch of classicism and refinement.
Decorations for alcoves or niches: To enhance dedicated architectural spaces.
Currently, the swans are mounted on oval bases in dark green/black lacquered wood finish, which accentuate their elegance and facilitate display.
Historical and Artistic Significance:
These swans represent not only an exceptional example of Empire period decorative animal sculpture but also a tangible testament to the taste and splendor of Italian high society in the early 19th century. Their provenance from an important palazzo increases their historical and collectible value as they have never been on the art market before.
For collectors, interior designers, or institutions, this pair of swans offers a rare opportunity to acquire authentic period pieces that embody the elegance and majesty of the Italian Empire style. Their versatility makes them suitable for both classical environments and for creating interesting contrasts in contemporary spaces, adding a touch of timeless refinement and historicity to any interior.
