About the Item

A rare and desirable art pottery sculpture two horses titled Mare & Foal, by renowned artist Stella Rebecca Crofts (British, 1898-1964) and dated 1944. Stella Rebecca Crofts was a British Artist who has a prolific career as a painter, sculptor and potter. She exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1925 and went on to win a silver medal at the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs in Paris the same year. She was elected to the Society of Women Artists in 1924 and later was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, Her work is held in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum as well as a number of other public collections around the world. The earthenware figures are hand-sculpted and stand mounted on a rectangular base with the foal standing between the mare’s front legs and licking her mouth. The figures are well detailed and portrayed and are decorated in red lustre-style streaked glazes which have heaped and piled where they have run down onto the base. The base has a white glazed finish and bears an incised signature Stella R Crofts and is dated 1944 and titled Mare & Foal. In good condition and minor wear associated with age and use. There are a few firing flaws including a flat underglaze section to one ear. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market
