About the Item

Marvelous pair of stylized and quality carved sheepdog bookends by P. Belys. In this day and age it is getting ever harder to find anything that is really handcrafted, let alone something of good quality. In 1920s and 1930s Europe many home accessories were made by real artisans and the quality of their creations is unlike anything that you find in stores today. Back in those days these incredibly well crafted pieces (and these sheepdog bookends are no exception) would have taken the sculptor a considerable amount of time to make. This is why top quality and signed pieces like this were only for the 'well to do'. This great quality carved and highly decorative pair of bookends is made by French or Belgian sculptor P. Belys and between his name and the golden line underneath it reads (in black lettering) 'main fait'. This is French for 'handmade'. Mind you, these virtually identical dog sculptures are all hand carved out of solid cherrywood and they have an amazing patina. Their 'straight faces' combined with their piercing, yellow and black glass eyes makes them look highly alert and that makes these unique dog sculptures truly impressive and attractive at the same time. They will look great on a large desk, but also on a side table or bookshelf with some books between them these skillfully made works of Art (Deco) are real eyecatchers. Apart from one minor 'nibble' to one ear (as shown in image 10), these dog sculptures are of museum quality and condition.
