About the Item

Featuring a Dog with Pups Rare Swiss Black Forest Dog group. The group modelled as a smooth coat St. Bernard female with her three puppies. The group exceptionally carved with a fantastic patination featuring naturalistic details and each dog with original glass eyes. The larger dog fitted with a carved collar and rope tie which lays under the paws. We firmly attribute the group to renowned Black Forest wood carver Walter Mader due to the characteristics matching the Dog groups known to be carved by Mader. The Black Forest dog group dates to the late 19th century to the early 20th century circa 1900. Notes Walter Mader and his son Heinrich of Brienz, Switzerland were best know for their life like dog carvings like the one above. Often Dog carvings such as this one were retailed by Retailed by Ed Binder & Co. For similar dog groups see page 78 of “Swiss Carvings The Art of The Black Forest”. Measurements 12cm High x 39.5cm Wide x 19cm Deep Condition Very Good, some old repairs visible upon close inspection.
