About the Item

Hand carved antique masterpiece. This original and all-hand carved, bear sculptures, antique Black Forest tobacco stand is another one of our recent great finds. This certainly is not the only Black Forest bear sculpture available on the worldwide web, but when it comes to the quality of the body posture and the details of the carvings, this prime example is right up there with the best. Especially the larger bear's face/head is extremely detailed and in the best possible condition. Just look at his nose, eyes, mouth, but also the many detailed hairs on his head and neck. This kind of quality combined with the amazing condition deserves the title 'museum worthy'. Apart from a professionally restored ear, this stunning antique could not be more original. The entire tray with the many carvings, the three cool sitting bears and the two hinged boxes (for which two of the bears serve as handles) has never had any breaks or cracks and this entire stand has never had any woodworm either. Real collectors understand how rare this is and, we believe, it is only because former owners also knew how exceptional this stand is, that it still is in this amazing condition, for they all took great care. However, what makes this Swiss antique stand out from even the better pieces out there is the hinging bear's head that serves as a secret compartment. It still hinges perfectly (via the original metal hinge) and, we believe, this hinging head was there to keep either a small bottle of liquor or a tobacco jar. The two hinging compartments on top are for keeping pipes, cigarettes or cigars and if you look closely at the bear sitting in the back then you will be able to see that between his claws a box of matches can be placed. Because of the perfect base with the large, hand carved Swiss Edelweis flowers this unique stand also stands as stable as the day it was made and it too is (and always has been) completely free of woodworm. The glass eyed and incredibly well carved larger bear is at the center of this Swiss Black Forest masterpiece and, as you can see in our images, this entire piece also has the most attractive patina. So if you enjoy smoking a pipe or cigar occasionally and if you also have a good eye for the rarest and best antiques available then maybe you should be the next custodian of this Swiss masterpiece. Repaired: We have found one restauration to the right ear of the large bear. So that is the ear on the inside / underneath the smoking tray he is holding. The smoking tray itself is untouched with no breakages and all original too. Wear consistent with age and use. This rare and superbly handcarved Black Forest antique is of museum quality & condition.
