Anton van Wouw - "The Accused" bronze
About the Item
Note: regarded at the father of South African sculpture, van Wouw was born in Dreidergen, Holland in 1862. He moved to Pretoria in 1890, and after 10 years received his first commission, from the South African financier Sammy Marks to create a monumental statue of Paul Kruger which was unveiled in Church Square, Pretoria. He developed a strong admiration for the Boer people and identified with their struggle and hopes. Apart from his monumental works, he became famous for his sculpture depicting the indigenous people of South Africa, and it is amongst these less formal pieces that his finest and most expressive work may be found.
