About

This rare and charming French terra cotta sculpture of a gypsy girl is the work of sculptor Edouard Fortiny. A jewel of the Art Nouveau style, this exotic young lady strikes a relaxed pose, and embodies the natural beauty that epitomized this remarkable period. Art Nouveau, an avant-garde style that emerged in the early 1890s, received widespread popularity almost simultaneously in Britain, France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, and America. The movement celebrated natural beauty with fluid lines, asymmetrical decorations and exotic subject matter. This outstanding figure combines all of these hallmarks to form a work that is at once vibrant and elegant.

Signed "Fortiny" in the front and side, and stamped "Fontaine & Durieux Paris 1032"
