About the Item

This wonderful sculpture speaks of multiple generations of Southwestern history and art. The piece that you are looking at is a bronze casting by renowned Arizona artist, Jack Osmer. The bronze was designed from another well-known sculpture. The original sculpture was made by Solon H. Borglum in 1907 and stands over twenty feet high in Prescott Arizona's courthouse square. The statue is officially known as the Captain William Owen O'Neill Memorial and unofficially called "The Rough Rider Monument." O'Neill was a popular former mayor of Prescott and sheriff of Yavapai County, who was killed in 1898 as captain of Troop A, First United States Volunteer Cavalry-Roosevelt's famed "Rough Riders." On July 3, 1907--the ninth anniversary of the charge up San Juan Hill by the Rough Riders--Solon attended the unveiling of the sculpture in Prescott. The monumental bronze was hailed as the finest equestrian statue in the United States. When the beloved "Rough Rider Monument" fell into disrepair, local artist Jack Osmer produced several bronzes like the one we are offering today and sold them to raise the funds needed to repair the original. Jack Osmer is as much of an art appreciator as he is an artist. Mr. Osmer was a founding member of the Phippen Art Museum, Prescott, AZ. Jack Osmer's reverence for Southwestern art and history can be expressed best in his own words: "I was born and raised with a strong belief in recording the traditions of past generations. This came from my Arizona pioneer family. These good people were the backbone of our culture and the real inspiration for my art. I want to tell you about this land and the many people who have cared for it with my art. If you are going to quote history in your art, quote it correctly, never stop researching. Bring to your art strength, pride, beauty, and motion." This "Rough Rider" cast bronze sculpture is a wonderful piece of Southwestern art history which deserves to be treasured and cherished as much as Jack Osmer cherished the Southwestern art that preceeded his own.
